Aaron Wong (Singapore)

Aaron Wong is one of the most published and recognized underwater photographer in Asia. A commercial photographer by trade, Aaron has been shooting professionally for over 16 years. With his experience, underwater photography came naturally the moment after he took his first breath underwater in 2001.

Aaron’s work is known for its strong colors and high contrast lighting techniques. This style subconsciously leaked into his underwater work where his dark and almost surreal images gain international acclaim. Aaron’s clever use of shadows created a style he calls ‘Dark Light’ where he started shooting dark pictures at a time when few did. Today, that style has become a trademark of his work.

Over the years, Aaron has gathered several international awards to his name including Our World Underwater, and the BBC Wildlife Photographer. A member of the prestigious Ocean Artists Society, Aaron’s underwater images has graced the pages of dive publications like Scuba Diving (USA), Alert Diver, Sport Diver, Fifty Fathoms, Wetpixel Quarterly, Tarzan (Japan), Red Bulletin (Austria), Unterwasser (Germany), Aquanaut (Germany), Asian Diver, Asian Geographic, Underwater Photography web magazine, Dive Photo Guide, and Scuba Diver Australasia where he also contributes as a field editor.

In 2006, Aaron started the WATER.COLORS project where he merged two of his greatest passions by bringing fashion photography underwater. Since then, underwater images of graceful models, have graced the pages of fashion magazines, won awards, and fronted Ad campaigns.

In April 2011, Aaron published his first book titled ‘WATER.COLORS’ showcasing some of the most stunning underwater images the world has ever seen. In April 2012, Aaron published his 2nd book titled ‘THE BLUE WITHIN’. With a foreword by David Doubilet, this book features the best of Aaron’s award winning underwater images from a decade of underwater exploration.

Aaron is now one of the most sort after underwater photographer in Asia with sponsorships from SEACAM, SCUBAPRO, UWATEC and FOURTH ELEMENT, a prestige reserved for the very best in the industry.

Through his images, Aaron helps spread the message of marine conservation. Most notably is his work with sharks where he campaigns actively for the projection of these beautiful animals. As the ambassador of Shark Savers, Aaron started the ‘FINished with Fins’ campaign in 2012, with aims to educate the mainstream media on the reality of shark finning. Today, ‘FINished with FINS’ is the largest shark saving campaign in the world with National Geographic, and WWF onboard.

Aaron now divides his time between his studio work and the protection and exploration of the world’s oceans.

아론 웡(Aaron Wong)은 아시아에서 가장 인지도가 높으면서도 인정받는 수중 사진가의 한 사람이다. 직업 사진가인 아론은 16년 넘게 사진을 전문적으로 촬영해왔다. 그러한 경험을 쌓으면서 2001년 처음으로 수중 세계를 접한 순간 자연스럽게 수중 사진에 눈을 뜨게 됐다.

아론의 작품은 강렬한 색채 및 고대비 조명 기법으로 유명하다. 이러한 스타일은 잠재의식 속에 그의 수중 작품에 스며들어 어둡고도 거의 초현실적인 그의 사진은 국제적인 찬사를 받고 있다. 아론은 어두운 사진을 촬영하는 사람이 거의 없던 시기에 그러한 모험을 시작해 어둠을 재치 있게 활용함으로써 소위 ‘어두운 빛(Dark Light)’이라는 스타일을 개발했다. 오늘날 그러한 스타일은 그가 선보이는 작품의 트레이드마크가 됐다.

2006년 아론은 WATER.COLORS 프로젝트에 착수해 패션 사진을 수중에 도입함으로써 자신이 심혈을 기울인 두 가지 열정을 접목시켰다. 그 이후로 우아한 모델들의 수중 사진이 패션 매거진의 페이지를 장식하였고, 여러 상을 수상하였으며, 광고 캠페인의 표지에 게재됐다.

2011년 4월 아론은 자신의 첫 번째 책 ≪WATER.COLORS≫를 출간해 세계적으로 가장 빼어난 수중 사진의 일부를 선보였다. 이듬해 4월 아론은 두 번째 책 ≪THE BLUE WITHIN≫을 출간했다. 데이비드 두빌레이가 서문을 쓴 이 책에는 아론이 10년간의 수중 탐사를 해오면서 상을 수상한 최고의 수중 사진들이 실려 있다.

아론은 현재 아시아에서 전성기에 있는 수중 사진가의 한 사람으로서 SEACAM, SCUBAPRO, UWATEC, 그리고 업계 최고의 명품을 시판하는 FOURTH ELEMENT의 후원을 받고 있다.

아론은 자신이 촬영한 사진을 통해 해양 보존이란 메시지의 확산을 돕고 있다. 특히 그는 상어에 주목해 이 아름다운 동물의 이미지를 널리 홍보하려고 적극적인 캠페인을 벌이고 있다. 상어를 보호하는 모임(Shark Savers)의 홍보대사인 아론은 상어 지느러미 채취의 현실을 주류 미디어에 주지시키기 위해 2012년 ‘상어 지느러미는 이제 그만(FINished with Fins)’이란 캠페인에 착수했다. 오늘날 ‘상어 지느러미는 이제 그만’은 세계 최대 규모의 상어 보호 캠페인으로 자리매김하였고 내셔널 지오그래픽과 WWF가 동참하고 있다.
