Joel Ibarra (Mexico)

Joel Ibarra grew up in Sonora, Mexico, 100Km away from the sea of cortez. Always curios by the secrets and wonders of the ocean, He decided to move to La Paz, Baja California in 2000 were He learned how to SCUBA dive. Got a job as a Divemaster at a local dive shop were a friend of him Naho Sugimachi gave him an underwater camera, he discover a new passion and started taking pictures.
A few years after (2010) got a job on Nautilus Explorer live aboard as a deckhand, were soon he became a Divemaster and continued to learn about underwater photography helping some of the best photographers in the industry to set their scuba gear and asking a lot of questions about photography in general.
Move to British Columbia Canada in 2015 to get some commercial diving training. Now days is back on the Nautilus fleet as a Divemaster and also as a First mate, gaining a lot of Nautical miles and experience working on a sailboat in the Spanish mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic ocean in 2016.
Bringing his pictures home to his daughter and wife is the biggest drive for him to keep taking pictures. He believes the future of the Oceans depends on what we teach our Little ones and showing the underwater life is one of the most powerful weapons we have to touch people and change habits. Also volunteer to help local and international researchers on technical work for sharks and mantas tracking and iding.

Joel Ibarra는 코르테즈해에서 100km 정도 떨어진 멕시코 소노라(Sonora)에서 자랐다. 항상 바다의 경이로움에 심취해 있었던 그는 2000년 바하캘리포니아(Baja California) 라파즈(La Paz)로 이사한 후 스쿠버다이빙을 배우게 되었다. 현지 다이브샵에서 다이빙마스터라는 일자리를 얻었고, 나호 스기마치(Naho Sugimachi)라는 친구가 준 수중카메라로 수중사진을 촬영하기 시작했다.
2010년에는 노틸러스 익스플로러(Nautilus Explorer) 리브어보드에서 갑판원(Deckhand)으로 일하면서 다이브마스터가 되어 수중사진을 집중적으로 배우기 시작했고 손님으로 방문한 최고의 수중사진작가에게 궁금한 점을 질문하며 사진촬영을 심도있게 배웠다.
2015년에는 브리티시 컬럼비아 캐나다로 상업적인 다이빙 훈련을 받기 위해 이주했다. 2016년에는 대서양을 건너는 스페인 지중해 연안에서 범선에서도 일을 했다. 2018년에는 노틸러스 익스플로러(Nautilus Explorer) 리브어보드에서 다이브마스터(Divemaster)로 재직 중이다.
수중사진을 지속적으로 촬영하는 동력은 그의 딸과 아내에게 보여주기 위해서이다. 그는 해양의 미래가 어린 아이들을 가르치는 것에 달려 있으며 그러기 위해서는 수중의 생태를 잘 알 수 있도록 사진이나 동영상으로 보여주는 것이 바다가 오염되는 것을 막는 가장 강력한 무기라고 믿는다. 또한 샤크와 만타레이 추적 및 관리 기술 작업에 대한 지역 및 국제 연구원의 자원봉사를 하기도 한다.
